The world of cannabinoid research is growing every day, covering everything from sleep problems to Covid. So, in light of all the discoveries, what are scientists saying about CBD? We look at some recent findings.
In amongst all the trend-led features and cure-all claims of CBD, it can be tough to find the truth. Can CBD really help you sleep, reduce your stress, boost energy and light a fire under your libido? There’s certainly an abundance of studies suggesting its potential for use in many areas.
It may seem too good to be true, but CBD does in fact have the ability to affect many different aspects of life, and the human body. This is because most cannabinoids, CBD included, are pleiotropic1 – boasting multiple mechanisms via a variety of molecular pathways. What’s more, it’s effects are biphasic2 (meaning it might have one effect at a lower dose and another at a higher dose) and adaptogenic. There’s even evidence to suggest that CBD may work differently in the body depending on the unique needs of the user3. Not to mention the fundamental interaction with the endocannabinoid system, which regulates all bodily functions.
So, with that in mind, let’s explore what scientists are saying about CBD…

In December 2021, Radicle ACES (Advancing CBD Education & Science) revealed real world data from the largest randomized controlled trial into real life CBD use yet1. The results were extremely positive, showing that of the 3000 participants (from a diverse population across a variety of ethnicities, age groups, geographies, behavioural habits, and pre-existing health conditions), 71% noticed improvements in their wellbeing, 61% saw significant improvements in sleep, 63% experienced meaningful change in anxiety and 47% found pain was reduced.

While 61% reported an effect within one to four hours of using their CBD product, and the largest improvements were observed within the first week, the trial went on for four weeks with consistent and regular product use throughout. Additional studies exploring the therapeutic use of other cannabinoids, THCv and CBN, will be underway this year.
New Research from the University of Michigan Health has shown that fibromyalgia patients are swapping their opioid painkillers for CBD.
In the study2, 72% of the 878 Fibromyalgia patients observed stated that they substituted opioids and other pain killers for CBD products, with many reporting that they stopped taking opioids entirely or reduced their dose as a result.

While THC is generally the cannabinoid best studied and commonly prescribed for pain relief (in legal medical cannabis clinic across the world), the findings not only in this study but a multitude of others suggest that CBD could hold promise for the future of fibromyalgia treatment.
Renowned cannabinoid researcher, Dr Ethan Russo, has previously examined the potential of cannabinoid therapy for fibromyalgia and other treatment resistant conditions such as migraines and IBS3, speculating that their root cause may in fact lie in an endocannabinoid deficiency.
As CBD oil is well known for supporting the endocannabinoid system and the production of endocannabinoids, this is an area likely to be extensively explored in years to come.
